Goal Design:

NOT the same as Goal Setting.

Goal Design is a five step process
of which Goal Setting is Step #4

We answer 5 Questions:

  1. Is my knowledge sufficient and my beliefs accurate ? (Beliefs)

  2. What is the ideal scenario that I desire ? (Vision)

  3. Why is this important to me ? (Purpose)

  4. What mile posts will indicate progress ? (Goals)

  5. What actions do I need to schedule and measure ? (Actions)

Let's use sleep as an example.

Q1) Beliefs about Sleep ?

Sleep is the 1st item in the Self Care shopping bag. Earlier in life I was irritated with having to sleep. It seemed to be an unproductive waste of time.

In the Coursera MOOC by Barbara Oakley, Learning how to Learn, she explains that the brain cleanses itself while sleeping and that the long term memory is filtering and storing information. Recently Peter Diamandis explained that sleep is one of the major factors influencing longevity.

Lack of knowledge helped establish a wrong belief that created major damage in my life. I recently realised that sleep is the starting point for Self Care.

Q2) Ideal Sleep Scenario ?

A Vision is the mind-picture of the ideal scenario.

My vision for sleep is to wake up fully rested and refreshed in the morning.

Q3) Why ?

I want to show up as my best "self" at work and when spending time with my family.
Lack of good quality sleep often results in:

To find the Reason for something gives it Value.

Great Impact & Meaning = Great Value.

Manifesting dreams requires money, time and effort. Money can be recovered. Time lost, is gone forever. Effort wasted is the worst because a weed was watered while a Flower died.

Solid Purpose prevents tragedies.

Q4) Sleep Goals ?

Often more than one goal is needed to win the game. Goals can change. Goals are like Mile Posts alongside the road on the journey of living the Dream.

Q5) Actions to Schedule & Measure ?

An Action Plan gives life to Goals. We measure actions (not goals).

An action plan includes steps, schedules, budgets, responsible persons and resources.

Example:

Overview of Goal Design

1)Beliefs ... 2)Dreams ... 3)Purpose ... 4)Goals ... 5)Actions

  1. Examine, Improve and Validate your Belief System: What do I know about "sleep"? Is my knowledge enough and is it based on the truth? What lies and limitations are contaminating my ideas about and my relationship with "sleep" ? What can I do to upgrade my knowledge and Belief System around "sleep" ?

  2. Establish the Dream (the Vision): using your imagination, emotions and desires. Envision the perfect Scenario. See the picture in terms of shape, colour, size, smell, and texture, as well as how it makes you feel. Write the Vision down. Display the Vision where you can see it.

  3. Connect meaning and Purpose: This is the stage where the Value of our Dream is determined. Ask: Why do I want it or need it? What is the meaning that I attach to this? What do I wish to gain from it? What do I want to experience ? How will it help me to Grow? What would it contribute? And lastly: What would be the impact if I don't acquire the Vision ? What would be gained and what would be lost? What would be lacking?

  4. Goal setting: can be thought of as using something like the SMART framework to set a goal which is: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound. Ask: What specific result do I want ? By when do I want it ? What must the colour, size, shape, smell and texture be? Where must it be located ? How much must it cost ? How will I make sure that I achieved my purpose ?

  5. Action Plan: Task >> Time >> Budget >> Responsible >> Result Our action plan contains the specific actions and strategies that must be executed in order to reach the goal.
