Life Plan Activation
Your Life plan is the actions, schedules and budgets needed to realise your Life-Goals. It is activated by Tracking and Reporting. Tracking is to: Measure results against a KPI.
Two Phases of Goal Management:
- Planning & Organising of:
Actions, Budgets, Responsibilities, Mile Stones and Schedules.
- Tracking & Reporting by:
Measuring KPI's, Reporting Progress & Corrective Action
We manifest our Vision (we make our Dreams come true) - by managing our Goals.
Why Measure ?
That which we measure improves. That which we
measure and report on improves at an accelerated rate.
There are two aspects around arriving at our destination:
- finding the right direction or the best route
- and then keeping on track and on schedule.
A high performance goal is a goal that is ON SPEED and ON TRACK.
The only way to make a goal high performing and keep
it high performing is to continuously: measure it and steer it.
Tracking is to:
find a sensible KPI, measure its progress and report it in a way that makes
trends visible. This helps us to make small corrections in order to
keep on track and on schedule. (It is like driving a car.)
Keeping on track (and on schedule) is to
measure against the plan (& schedule)
and provide quick-and-frequent-feedback
in order to facilitate continuous-small-corrections.
Tracking helps to adapt-and-improve our action plan (& schedule).
How Often?
More frequent measurements mean that faults continued for shorter periods and smaller corrections are needed.
- A sensible time frame to set Goals is 12 weeks (see https://12weekyear.com).
- A sensible time frame to plan Actions is weekly (Steven Covey 's book : First Things First , etc.)
- Tracking however should be done on a daily basis.
What to Measure?
Should we measure Goals / Actions / Vision manifestation ?
Life Diary does daily tracking of weekly actions.
daily tracking of weekly actions
Measuring of actions helps us to form habits. Weekly planning helps us to
sensibly balance each day of our schedule, and cater for contingencies.
Why Report ?
When we report our position-and-progress three things happen to accelerate our progress:
accountability, encouragement, and counselling.
Reporting implies being accountable for our progress. Accountability means that there is a lot at stake. What we are doing matters to somebody and this gives meaning to everything.
We are encouraged by our progress when it has meaning and when it is made known. Publishing our success leads to more success. (The Progress Principle, Kramer & Amibile.)
If we measure-and-report it implies a critical review of the effectiveness of the action plan itself. We create a forum for the improvement of the action plan (&schedule).
Mentors
Mentors and coaches can help us to design our goals and find new direction. These people must be willing to contribute their time and experience to our success.
Summary
- Tracking (measuring the progress of) the action plan helps us
to make small adjustments to keep it on track. This increases the progress.
- Reporting our progress (being accountable) accelerates
the tempo of progress. It breeds success and serves to encourage us and provides us with counsel to improve the action plan.
- For accountability to work best, it helps to find a Mentor or Coach.
- The time frames that work the best are: 12 weekly goals employing a weekly reviewed action plan that is tracked on a daily basis.
